Is it safe to eat durian with alcohol?
The warning is common, but evidence in people is missing. A 2009 lab study found durian extract slowed a yeast enzyme involved in breaking down alcohol, which may explain the belief. If you are worried, do not mix them, and ask a doctor if you have a health condition.

The belief that durian and alcohol are a dangerous mix is widespread across Southeast Asia. In 2009, researchers publishing in Food Chemistry tested durian extract on aldehyde dehydrogenase, an enzyme involved in processing alcohol. They found strong inhibition in a yeast enzyme, with sulphur-rich fractions most active.
That was a test-tube study on a yeast enzyme, not a study in people. It does not measure risk to humans, and the authors say the scientific basis of the reported effect had not been established.
This is general information, not medical advice.
Common questions
Does durian with alcohol kill you?
We found no human study showing this. Lab research suggests a possible mechanism, so caution is reasonable. Ask a doctor if you are unsure.
