Durian questions, answered
When is durian season in Malaysia?
National guides put the main season around June to August and a smaller one around November to January. Published guides place East Malaysia's peak around October to February. Timing shifts every year, so confirm with a seller.
What is the best durian in Malaysia?
There is no single best, because it depends on taste. Musang King (D197) is the usual benchmark for rich, bittersweet flesh, Black Thorn (D200) is known for sweet orange flesh, and D24 is a long-standing bittersweet favourite.
How much does durian cost?
Prices swing with the harvest. Musang King was reported at RM15 to RM60 per kg in Penang in June 2026 and from S$8 per kg in Singapore in January 2026, both during large crops. See our price page for dated figures.
Where can I eat durian on a farm in Malaysia?
Penang's Balik Pulau and Pahang's Raub and Bentong are the best-documented areas. See our list of farms that let you eat on site, including those where you can stay overnight.
How do I tell which durian variety I have?
Flesh colour, seed size and taste are the most useful cues once the fruit is open. Our identifier narrows it down, though only the grower or a DNA test can confirm a variety.
Should I buy durian opened or whole?
Whole fruit opened in front of you is the usual way to check freshness. Packed flesh is convenient, so ask when it was opened.
What does a bad durian smell like?
Sour or fermented smells suggest older fruit. A strong smell alone is normal.
Can I bring durian from Malaysia to Singapore?
Singapore allows fruit for personal use in a small, reasonable hand-carry quantity, with no published durian-specific limit. Check current SFA and ICA guidance before travelling.
Is durian banned on the MRT?
Yes, durian is not permitted on Singapore MRT trains. Reports differ on whether a fine is applied.
Does durian with alcohol kill you?
We found no human study showing this. Lab research suggests a possible mechanism, so caution is reasonable. Ask a doctor if you are unsure.
Which state produces the most durian in Malaysia?
Pahang led the 2019 crop figures. Johor has since reported over 214,000 tonnes a year, but the figures use different years and methods, so we make no current ranking.
Can Malaysia export fresh durian to China?
Yes. A protocol signed on 19 June 2024 allows registered producers approved by China's customs authority to ship fresh durian.
How long does opened durian last?
Eat it the same day for the best flavour, or within a day or two if kept in an airtight box in the fridge. Freeze it for longer storage.
