Bringing durian into Singapore, and on the MRT or to a hotel

Singapore's food agency allows fruit for personal use in a small, reasonable hand-carry quantity, but sets no specific durian limit. Durian is not allowed on MRT trains, and some hotels charge a fee for bringing it in.

Crossing the border

The Singapore Food Agency allows fruit and vegetables for personal use in a small, reasonable hand-carry quantity, from any country. It publishes no weight limit and does not name durian. Larger amounts need an import licence or permit, and food must come from approved sources. We did not find an ICA rule specific to durian at the land checkpoints, so check current guidance before you travel.

On the MRT and buses

Durian is not permitted on Singapore MRT trains. Mothership reports a fine of up to S$500 under the rapid transit regulations, though we could not open a current official text and other sources dispute whether a fine applies. SBS Transit asks passengers not to carry items that may offend others, durian among them.

In hotels

Some hotels publish no-durian policies with charges. Mothership cites a S$250 charge at one hotel and a cleaning charge at another. Check house rules first.

On flights

We did not find an airline policy we could confirm. Ask your airline before you pack any durian.
